[ISTA] List Reminder

This message is sent each month to all subscribers of the
Syclone/Typhoon mailing list. Please keep a copy of this
message handy so you will know how to remove yourself, and
you'll be able to tell others how to sign-up.

For help send "help" in the body of a message to
majordomo@syty.org

Sign-up for the list by sending a message to majordomo@syty.org with
one of the following in the body of the message, depending
on which list you want to read: "subscribe syty" [without
the quotes] to receive the live-feed of messages,
or send "subscribe syty-digest" [without the quotes] to receive
a single message for every 25 messages to the list.

Remove yourself by sending a message to majordomo@syty.org with
one of the following in the body of the message, depending
on which list you are receiving: "unsubscribe syty" to be
removed from the live-feed or "unsubscribe syty-digest" to
be removed from the digest... without the quotes, of course

If you followed the above instructions and you get
an error returned to you that mentions the word
"MIME", you must turn off all HTML, Rich-Text or
other "fancy" mail options. See your system administrator
for more information.

You may also use the form on http://www.syty.org/mailout.html
to perform the above tasks

http://www.syty.org is the official WWW site of the
Syclone/Typhoon mailing list. Please visit that
site before you post to the list. Your question
may be answered already.

If you have any questions or comments on the WWW site and or
the e-mail lists, please send e-mail to webmaster@syty.org

============================

Syclone and Typhoon Mailing List Charter

By reading this information, you not only
help yourself, (through greater knowledge) but you also help the rest of
the list. (by learning how to use this mailing list properly.)

General Netiquette or "Network Etiquette" applies here- there are many
sources of good information on this topic available on the 'net- you are
encouraged to read it. Check it out:

http://www.albion.com/netiquette/corerules.html

The main thing to remember is to stay on topic- if you have to include
the phrase "This is a little off topic, but...", then you shouldn't
post it. If you have doubts about a subject, ask the administrator.

That being said, let's get down to specifics-

Racial/Ethnic/Religious/Sexual slurs will not be tolerated, and can be
grounds for permanent banishment from the list. Compose your messages
as if you knew your grandmother or 8-yr-old daughter were going to
read it.

Always 'sign' your posts with your name and email address. Consider
including your hometown in your signature. That enables others to
know where you are from. Long signatures with 20 lines of ASCII-
art may be really cute on USENET newsgroups, but please don't
sign your message to the syty like that.

Do not post image files or attachments of any type, even when a list
member requests them. Many people pay for their email, on a per megabyte
basis. An attachment that one person requests, may be useless to another.

Do not post subscribe/unsubscribe/change of address requests to the main
list address. <syty@syty.org> These posts should be sent
directly to the administrator of the list at webmaster@syty.org.

When quoting someone else's post, don't include all of their post.
Only quote relevant sections. In many cases, you may not have to quote any
of it. Anyone subscribed to the list should have seen the original
already, so it's often not necessary to repeat it.

If you do quote someone else's post, make sure its clear what part
is theirs and what part is yours. Some mailers put a ">" in front of each
quoted line. This is a good practice on and off the list.

Send 'personal' mail and comments directly to the person(s) they are
directed to. Each time you post, consider if the entire list really needs
to read your message, or just one or two people.

If mail bounces-back from your address for more than a few messages, you
will be removed from the list (without notice, of course, 'cause your
mail is bouncing). You will need to signup again after you get your
mailbox back in order.

The mail server tries to be really smart and attempts to process mail
commands for you, so if your subject has the word "help" in it, it
is passed off to the administrator for review. Messages containing
lines that begin with certain key words are also passed to the
administrator (e.g. "help", "subscribe", "unsubscribe", "cancel").
Please avoid them. If you forget, you won't see your message.

================
General no-nos

Don't post (or reply to) any messages on vanity license plates. These
only consume time, and don't follow with the purpose of the list. There
are many WWW pages available that have cute ideas if you are interested in
a vanity plate. It is suggested that you visit the Yahoo search engine.

Don't post messages pertaining to personal information, such as "What
does everybody do for a living", or "Is there anybody that lives in
my region of the country?" These posts needlessly consume bandwidth, and
inconsiderately force people to read messages that can't possibly apply
to them. Many people on the list put their city and state in their
signature at the end of each message. You can also visit the
Syclone/Typhoon home page if you are interested in finding another owner
in an area near you.

Extended threads on stereo equipment brands/models are best left in
private email. If you have tips on how to address specific Sy/Ty related
mounting issues, it will be allowed, but remember that the list isn't for
discussing stereo equipment.

Flaming particular brands of vehicles (whether they are competitive or
not) will not be tolerated. No Ford vs. Chevy vs. Brand X... It is very
easy to stray off topic, when discussing a vehicle that you roasted last
Saturday night at your local street rod gathering.

Don't get involved in extended flames over any subject on the list,
no matter whether it's relevant or not. In general, a thread of an
inflammatory tone should not extend past three (3) messages before
being taken to personal mail among the parties involved. Any and all
parties involved in extended flames will be subject to disciplinary
action, whether they were the party that "started it" or not. It is VERY
tempting to reply publicly when someone makes a comment that you find
rude, but please bite your tongue.

Commercial ads are not acceptable. You may mention the fact that you
parts available in a related post, but outright ads will not be
tolerated. If you have Sy/Ty specific parts for sale, by all means post
them, but avoid placing advertisements for a commercial product.

Other vehicles may be discussed for comparison purposes only.
Don't ask people about your Buick or Chevy Suburban that isn't working.

There shall be no "how much does your insurance cost" threads.
Insurance costs vary from state to state and from one driving record to
another, so no really useful information can come from such a thread. It's
not in line with the base subject matter.

Don't vent to the list- about your bank, your ex-wife, the guy who
pulled out in front of you this AM. Don't post messages about the
fact that you wrecked your truck, unless it's to ask if there's any
available parts.

Don't soapbox either, unless it's very relevant. Rambling on about what
bothers you on the list or the world in general helps nobody. If you have
a problem with the list, send it directly to the moderator.

Don't be a net-cop; ie, don't point out other's violations of charter
to the rest of the list. If you see violations of charter occur, report
them to the moderator.

While these rules may seem fairly restrictive, they actually leave
room for lots of discussion. The following actions will be taken
in response to any charter violation:

First offense within a 3 month period- Warning from the administrator
about the behavior.

Second offense within a 3 month period- 3 day "cool-down" suspension.
You may return to the list after the 3 day period, provided that
you send an apology for the behavior to the list.

3rd offense within 3 months- permanent removal from the list.

"I didn't read the charter" will not be accepted as an excuse.
The moderator has full authority over all charter decisions, and
has the final say in any arbitration.

Thank you,

syty.org administrators
