Re: [ISTA] NP205 X-Fer Case..Driveline Gurus..
Hey,
I had a conversation with a list member in your vicinity recently about this
and I stated that this little impasse would eventually hold up the
development of the NP-205 for use in a SyTy application.
You have a couple of options.
1.) Find an NP-205 that was originally suited for a Dodge or a F*rd
application. They almost always have their input shaft for the front
differential on the driver's side just like the SyTy. Then you will be
trying to mate a GM tranny to a foreign transfer case
2.) Find a "divorced" transfer case with a jack-shaft style input shaft from
any manufacturer as long as the front output shaft for the front
differential is on the driver's side. The jack-shaft is a little driveshaft
that connects in between the tranny and the transfer case and allows
***ANY*** type of tranny to be output to the transfer case by merely
altering the style of the jack-shaft to match. The problem with this is the
added length and decreased length of the individual driveshafts.....the
front one will be really long and the rear one will be really short. This
setup is conducive to better rear biased weight transfer however.
3.) Use the GM style NP-205 with the output on the wrong side and turn the
front differential to match it. Then you will need to find someone to
custom make you a set of reverse cut ring/pinion gears that will correct the
condition you created by turning the front differential 180 degrees. Try
this experiment: spin the input yoke of a differential, now turn the whole
differential assembly 180 degrees while still spinning the input yoke in the
same direction --> notice how the differential now makes the axles spin
opposite to what it once did in the original situation. Reverse cut gears
will make everything back to normal.
In any case, custom driveshafts will have to be made which isn't a big deal
at all.
It's all a matter of what you have to work with.
Hope this helps someone....
Later for now,
